What Is Included In The Pictionary Game Board?
When you are looking for having a good time with your family and friends, one of the best things that you can do is to get yourself the Pictionary board game. You will need at least 2 people to play. However, things get a lot more interesting and funnier when the group is bigger.
The game board already comes with a game board, category cards, 4 playing pieces, a die, and a 1-minute sand timer. On your own, you will need to have paper and pencils for everyone who is playing.
While the game already includes different category cards, the truth is that Pictionary is an addictive game. And as soon as you notice, you’ll be repeating the same old cards. This is why we developed our Pictionary word ideas generator. This way, you will never run out of different words to play. In addition, we know that Pictionary is a family game. So, in our Pictionary word ideas generator, we wanted to make sure that we included different categories as well as different difficulty levels. This way, if you’re playing Pictionary with your kids or nephews, you may want to only get the Easy words. As they grow older, you can then increase the difficulty level. On the other hand, when you are playing only with adults, you can set the difficulty to whatever you prefer. When in doubt, just ask the other players what they prefer and go from there.
How To Play Pictionary
In case you never played Pictionary before or if it was already a long time ago and you don’t remember the rules, just keep reading.
The first thing you need to do is to divide the players into two teams. While you can form up to 4 teams, the truth is that it is a lot more fun if you have teams with more elements.
You will then need to pick the person who will make the first drawing for the first word. As soon as he gets the word and starts to draw, everyone else on the team will try to discover what it is.
Before you start playing, you will need to give each team some paper and pen for the drawings as well as a Pictionary category card. There are many different Pictionary categories. There are Pictionary categories for person, place or animal; for object; for action like an event; for difficult words; and for all play.
While there are different Pictionary categories, the truth is that you should start with the first one: for person, place or animal.
Pictionary Rules
While many people decide to make their own rules to play Pictionary to make it even funnier and more interesting, there are some ground rules that everyone tends to follow.
Here are the main rules to play Pictionary:
#1: Starting The Game:
In order to know which team is the first one to play, both teams need to roll the die once. The higher number plays first.
#2: The Time:
After the first card is chosen, the two people from both teams who are drawing will have 5 seconds to see it. The time to draw and for both teams to try to guess will only start as soon as the drawers are in place and are ready to start.
#3: Drawing:
Both team members should be drawing at the same time. This is when you should start the sand timer. As we already mentioned, the sand timer is about 1 minute. While they are drawing, both teams will need to guess what it is. As soon as one of the teams guess the word correctly, they win the game.
#4: Guessing The Word Correctly:
One of the things that you need to have in mind when you are playing Pictionary is that when you are drawing the word so your team can guess the word, you cannot use hand gestures, talk, or write any letters or numbers.
#5: Rolling The Die:
This is one of the rules of the game that tends to confuse more people. However, it’s fairly simple to understand.
All you need to know is that there is only one team at the time that has the control over the die. The first team to guess the word right is the one who wins the control over it.
Whenever there is a new Pictionary card taken but no team is able to guess the right word, the die shouldn’t be rolled. The only time when the die is rolled is when a team wins the game.
#6: Winning:
The team who wins is the one that is able to guess the word right, within time, in the final All Play square. The truth is that it may take several times for a team to win the game or you may end up winning on your first try.
Adapting The Pictionary Rules
While most people tend to play with Pictionary’s rules, the truth is that when you like the game, you tend to adapt some of them to make the game even better. Here are some of the rules that you can consider to use to make things more interesting:
#1: The Time To Guess The Word:
While some people believe that 1 minute is more than enough, for others it may be a bit hard to guess the word correctly. This is even truer when you are playing with kids. So, you can extend the time. In order to do this, you can turn the sand timer 2 or 3 times or you can use a chronometer in your smartphone, for example.
#2: Awarding Points:
To make Pictionary more challenging, you can set a score for everytime a team guesses the word. Let’s say that you give 1 point for each word that is guessed right. So, whenever a team reaches 10 points, the end games and you can start it again.
You can also choose to score the words differently depending on the difficulty or the category, for example.
And to make the game even more interesting, you can also choose to withdraw points whenever a team takes more than the stipulated time to guess the word.
#3: Using Gestures:
While using the Pictionary original rules, the person who is drawing can’t make any gestures, you can decide that the person is allowed to do them. This can be a lot of fun since besides drawing the person will do some funny faces and a lot of gestures that will certainly provoke a lot of laughs.
